    This is the pendant to Gaudete Sunday during Advent. The day changes in its mood, a break from the "gloomy mood" of Lent. The liturgical vestments change to rose-colored (rose-pink). The music choices reflects that mood.

E) Holy Week and Easter - top

    HOLY WEEK

  1. Palm Sunday: April 5, 2020. Technically Palm Sunday is the last Sunday of Lent, although it also marks the coming of the Tridum (Holy Week).

  2. Holy Thursday: April 9, 2020.

  3. Also called "Mass of Thursday of the Lord's Supper.
    The tabernacle is entirely empty. A sufficient amount of bread is consecrated for this mass as well as for Hood Friday.
    Liturgy of the Word.
    Washing of the Feet
    Prayer of the Faithful and Liturgy of the Eucharist.

    Transfer of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Following the prayer after communion, all kneel, the celebrant incenses the Blessed Sacrament.
    The Blessed Sacrament is then carried through the church to the place of reposition. During that time, the "Pange Ligua" is sung. Once the procession reaches the place of reposition, the "Tantum Ergo" is being sung. At Our Lady's the place of reposition is St Joseph's Chapel at Our Lady's Academy. Part of the congregation will still be singing the "Pange Lingua" while the head of the procession reaching the Chapel will sing the "Tantum Ergo" (a capella).

    The Gospel Reading is the Passion of the Lord according to St John. Following the Reading of the Passion there is a short homily.
    The Solemn Intercessions.
    THey conclude the Litrugy of the Word. They are ten invocations (intercessions).
    The Adoration of the Cross.
    The celebrants and other ministers go to the back of the church, the main celebrant receives the unveiled cross. The cross is carried into procession. The celebrant and the procession stop three times, each time with an invocation "This is the Wood of the Cross" with response from the assembly "Come Let Us Adore".
    Adoration of the Cross.
    Main celebrant, clergy,ministers and faithful approach in procession to venerate the cross It can be a simple genuflexion, touching or kissing the cross or some other sign of reverence. During the adoration the choir and assembly sings an appropriate song "Were YOu There", "Stabat Mater", "Precious Lord" or any other suitable anthem
    Holy Communion.
    The ciborium with the Blessed Sacrament is brought from the place of reposition. All stand in silence. The Lord's Prayer is said and Communion is distributed.
    Prayer after Communion. Then depart in silence.
  6. Easter Vigil: April 11, 2020.
    The Vigil starts at sunset.
    The Easter Vigil starts with the blessing of the Fire usually done at the entrance of the church, weather permitting. The church is in the dark, the Paschal Candle is lit from the fire, then while the celebrant processes towards the altar, the faithful assembled in the church lit their own candles to match the celebrant progression.
    The celebrant stops three times while advancing towards the altar, singing "Lumen Christi" (The light of Christ), everytime singing it higher in pitch. Arriving at the altar, the Paschal Candle is installed on its base.
    At that point, a priest or deacon (or a lay person, if no priest or deacon is available) will sing the Exsultet. It is a song of exultation and rejoicing. It is sung in English in its long form.

    Following the proclamation of the Exsultet, will begin the Liturgy of the Word.
    We chose at Our Lady's five readings, each of them followed by a Psalm and a closing prayer. Some of those readings are mandatory, others are facultative.
    The readings chosen at Our Lady's: Genesis, Exodus, Isaiah,Epistle (ST Paul Romans), Gospel (Luke). The Gloria that was absent during the entire season of Lent reappears before the 4th reading (Epistle).

    Baptismal Liturgy
    The Celebrant or Deacon cllas the candidates for Baptism and godparents. Is is followed by the Litany of the Saints
    The priest then blesse the water to be used for Baptism. The celebrant asks the candidate(s) in a series of questions to renounce sin and profess their faith.
    Then the candidate is baptized.
    Anointing. If the Confirmation of the baptized is separated from their Baptism, the celebrant anoints him/them immediately after Baptism.xbr÷ If the candidate was already baptized but never confirmed, it will be anointed at that point.
    Clothing with Baptismal Garnment. The newly baptized is clothed with a baptismal garnment. Then he is presented with a lighted candle.
    Blessing of the Water. The water is blessed.
    Renewal of Baptismal Promises THe assembly renews its baptismal promises.
    Celebration of Reception. If there is a candidate for reception, he/she will call along with the sponsors. Profession of faith.
    Celebration of Confirmation. The newly baptized is confirmed.
    Liturgy of the Eucharist.The Liturgy of the Eucharist continues as usual. Conclusion and end of the Liturgy.

    Note on Pentecost Sundays
  1. Until 1962, the Sundays following Pentecost all the way to Advent were known as 2nd Sunday after Pentecost, 3rd Sunday after Pentecost etc...
    This changed after the publication in 1962 of the new Roman Missal and especially after the proclamation of the le Motu proprio « Mysterii paschalis » by Pope Paul VI in 1969
    It was changed to what is presently the Ordinary Time
