Being a Cantor at Our Lady's
Welcome to the Cantoring page.
Liturgical Seasons 2018 - January 2018
Happy new Year to all. Welcome to our Cantor page.
Cantoring is an essential part of our liturgical celebrations. Being a cantor is foremost being a minister. The role of a cantor is a dual one. As a cantor you proclaim the Word in singing the Psalm from the ambo. As a leader of songs you lead the assembly into congregational singing.
We are soon entering our Lenten Season with Ash Wednesday on February 14. We are using the Respond and Acclaim for our Responsorial Psalms. We will be using PBotti's Lenten Gospel Acclamation, composed for Our Lady's in 1994, all the way to Good Friday. In some instances we will use a different setting of a Psalm. For example we will use the Joncas' setting of Psalm 118 "This is the Day" for Easter instead of the one proposed in Respond and Acclaim.
Liturgy Music Program: The weekly music program as well as the music program for the Holy Days is listed on the left column of this page. Each week is presented as a pdf file that is printable and downloadable. The printed music is available in the music section of the page. When available, links to recordings on YouTube will be provided. For copyright reasons, this page does not host audio recording of the music for our celebrations unless those are in the Public Domain (which is rare).
Cantors at Our Lady's: Some of our cantors are members of the schola, the teenage advanced music group, specializing in traditional classical church repertoire from the Renaissance to the modern times. We also have adult cantors. The other cantors are younger and participate in leading the assembly in songs for our youth celebrations, children's masses and other masses as well. Cantors rehearse on Thursday from 5pm to 6 pm and also 40 ns prior to the mass they cantor. Cantors who are also members of the schola rehearse instead on Thursday from 6 pm to 7 pm. See Schedules and Notes.
Cantor Resources: Each cantor should always have three resources: 1. Respond and Acclaim book, 2. Choral and Praise Hymnal 3. Breaking Bread Missalette. In addition each should also have a folder with the solo and choir music sung as well as additional music not in the Missalette or in the Hymnal.
